Nordic Summer - 2004
It being over a year since we last visited the Baltic proper, and since our main holiday for 2004 (The "Habsburg Tour") had been put back to September/October, we couldn't resist the temptation of a short summer-time trip to some of our favourite places in the mid Baltic.
We started in Stockholm, then got the ferry to Mariehamn in the Åland Islands for a couple of days, then by ferry again to Turku, and train on to Tampere for a few days there, before going on by train to Helsinki. Our friends Viv, Dave McI, and Martin joined us in Helsinki for the weekend.
Although we had glorious weather at both ends of the holiday - in Stockholm and Helsinki, and part of the time in Mariehamn - our stay in Tampere was marred by almost continuous rain for the two days we were there. Which is a shame as this was the place we were the least familiar with, and had hoped to spend some time exploring. At least that gave us an excuse to visit a couple of Tampere's excellent museums.
On these pages you can see our itinerary, a route map, details of the hotels we stayed at, some on-line resources, a bookmark page with lots of links and miscellaneous information that we gathered together in planning the trip, and a Notepad page with key links and notes on things to do and see.
