Comments:

Excellent modern 4-star hotel not far from Zoo and Kurfurstendamn. Nice rooms, friendly and helpful staff, and good breakfast. The rack rate is steep (€275/night), but we got an excellent deal through Utell on a really nice, stylish, comfortable and spacious double room in the rotunda (in the picture).

Stayed: May 2001 (4 nights)
Rates: DEM 248/night (approx £85)
Booking: On-line via Bookings DE reservations service.
Comments:

In May 2001 we stayed at the Hotel Auberge, a small (29 room) hotel a very short walk from Wittenberg platz, towards the West part of the city centre.

We booked on-line, through the "Bookings DE" reservations service at , which worked just fine. We paid their lowest pubished rate for a standard double room (inc. breakfast): DEM 248/night (approx £85), which for four nights = DEM 992 in total (approx: £340 = £170 each).

This was a friendly and comfortable hotel, with a very tasy breakfast buffet. The room was a reasonable size, and double glazed, although not air conditioned - which could be a problem in the summer as the traffic noise at the front of the building (where our room was) is quite bad in the mornings. The location is nice and central, with a number of cafes and restaurants close by. Being close to a U-bahn station on the U1 and U2 lines means that most of the rest of Berlin is within easy reach.

Stayed: July 1997 (4 nights)
Rates: DEM 150/night
Booking: Direct by e-mail.
Comments:

In 1997 we stayed at the very nice Charlottenburger Hof hotel, which is right opposite the Berlin-Charlottenburg S-bahn station in the west of the city.

We booked directly with the hotel by e-mail, and got a rate DM 150 a night, including breakfast (but that was in 1997 - check with the hotel for their latest rates!).

The hotel is a little way out of the centre of the city, but this is not really a problem as it is so close to the S-bahn station. The rooms are quite spacious and nicely decorated. We had one with a balcony, at the front of the building. Breakfast is served in the Cafe Voltaire on the ground floor, which basically means that you can take it when you like. There are a number of breakfast menus to choose from, which makes a nice change from the usual buffet breakfast.
