Hotel Atlas
On all of our trips to Brussels we have stayed at the Hotel Atlas, which is in the city centre, close to the Bourse (Stock Exchange) and St Catherine. This is a really nice hotel in a great location. We've stayed at this hotel ten times so far, and it now seems that a trip to Brussels just wouldn't be the same if we couldn't stay here!

The local area

The Atlas is a very friendly 3-star 88-bed hotel in a quiet street very close to good restaurants and bars, and only 5 minutes walk from the Grand Place. The local area has been undergoing substantial regeneration over the past few years (the Atlas Hotel being just one example), and has become a very appealing and vibrant district, which benefits from being out of the main tourist areas, but close enough to make them easily accessible. On the same block as the restaurant there are some excellent restaurants (eg La Kasbah and Bonsoir Clara) and bars (L'Archiduc, Le Greenwich, and Fin de Siecle), the traditional fish restaurants around St Catherine are only one street away, as is the very lively cafe scene around the former Halles Saint Gery.

The Hotel

As for the hotel, we'd be hard put to find anything to criticise. The staff are polite and friendly, and all the desk staff speak good English. The standard of the rooms is just what you would expect from a good 3-star medium-sized business hotel. Overall, it is comfortable, clean and modern - it is not easy to find this sort of standard in a city centre hotel at these prices. The breakfast, although perhaps a little more limited than larger hotels can offer, is good quality and varied enough for most people (you can order cooked items such as eggs, but there is an extra charge).

Rates

Booking direct with the hotel over the Internet can get you quite a good deal. And it is true what all the guide books tell you about Brussels Hotels: they can be much cheaper at the weekends (and during July and August), often almost half the normal week-day rate - the current weekend rate is €75.00 per night (about £50) for a double room with breakfast (service, taxes and VAT included). And the weekend rates normally apply to Sunday nights too (as well as Friday and Saturday, of course!), which makes it a good choice for long weekends. A normal weekday night costs €115.00 (about £80), which although rather more, is still pretty good value by Brussels standards.

Booking

E-mail requests for information on room availability are responded to by the next working day at the latest (often sooner) with an e-mail from a named hotel executive, and you can make your reservation by return e-mail. This is confirmed by e-mail the next day (you can guarantee your reservation by providing credit card details if you wish).
