Cologne
Cologne (Köln), Germany's oldest city - originally a "colony" of the Roman Empire - hence the name. By train from London it is just six hours with one change at Brussels (see latest itinerary).
We first visited Cologne in 1997 on our "Grand Tour", where we spent a couple of days on our way from Munich to Amsterdam. In March 2001, Andrew's 40th birthday gave us an excuse to have another look at this part of Germany, and to try the Thalys service between Brussels and Cologne. Our latest visit was in December 2007, when we combined a long weekend there with an overnight stop in Brussels. This time our excuse was the new high-speed route between St Pancras International
and Brussels, and also the German railways ICE service from Brussels to Cologne.
Unfortunately, Andrew had a nasty accident halfway through the trip, which rather spoilt the rest of the holiday, so there is not much here in the way of write-ups. Maybe next time :)
From this page you can access all of our on-line material on Cologne. There are picture galleries, reviews, interactive maps, and useful on-line resources (links to on-line guides, weather, currency, daylight hours etc). For other useful links see the Notepad.
