Central Europe - Autumn 2004 The Habsburg Tour
We have been discussing this trip for over a year now, but finally we have a proper plan. Our friends Viv, Dave McI and Martin will be coming along too, for the first part of the trip.
The concept is quite simple: take five capital cities in central/eastern Europe (three of which are new entrants to the EU); take the train between them; and you have a 1,200km circular tour around the heart of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. For simplicity, we are just referring to it as "The Habsburg Tour".
Starting at Vienna, we will be visiting Bratislava (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary), Zagreb (Croatia), and Ljubljana (Slovenia), before returning (via Villach in Austria) to Vienna. Our route takes us from the foothils of the northwestern Carpathians; along the Danube, through one of its most scenic sections; along the shores of Lake Balaton - continental Europe's largest lake; across the plains of Pannonia; and through the Julian Alps. So we should get a good variety of scenery!
On these pages you can see a route map, our itinerary, details of the hotels we are staying at, some on-line resources, and a bookmark page with lots of links and miscellaneous information that we have gathered together in planning the trip.
