Helsinki We both really loved this city when we first stopped-off here during our Baltic Odyssey in July and August 1999. Then Finland was having its hottest Summer in living memory (and it was pretty hot!), and we got to enjoy the city at its summertime best, before heading off to Turku and the Åland islands.
Our next visit was for Dave's birthday in November 2000, and we really started to get into the city and the people, despite the cold and drizzly weather. Then, in July again in 2002, on the Baltic Triangle tour we enjoyed another experience of Helsinki in the summer, complete with picnic on the rocks and naked bungee jumpers!
In November 2002 we had an unexpected treat - lots of snow - and took a trip to Tampere. In March 2003, we had the brilliant experience of walking across the frozen sea to some of the tiny islands on the seaward side of the city - a truly unforgettable experience (see Photos). Our next visit is at the end of another trans-Baltic trip - Summer 2004.
Helsinki is a wonderful city, whatever the weather. It always seems to have something new to offer - and add to that fascinating architecture, an attractive seaside setting, intriguing history, great food (really, great food), friendly people, and stylish shopping. Not to mention the (in)famous Finnish Friday nights (OK we won't).
