The Storebælt Fixed Link
Country: Denmark Journey: Århus - Copenhagen Day 5 -
Thursday 24 July
The train route from Jutland to Copenhagen now takes-in the newly completed
Store Bælt (Great Belt) fixed link, across the wide sound between the
Danish islands of Funen and Zealand. Until July 1997, this journey involved a
ferry crossing between the two islands. The link is in three sections, which you
can (just about) see in the picture on the left - a 6.6km
rail and road bridge; an 8km rail tunnel; and a [6km]
road suspension bridge.
Going West - East, the train first travels across the gently curving "trestle"
bridge alongside the motorway (not yet comissioned) to the artificially extended
island in the middle of the Great Belt. At that point the train dives into a
tunnel under the rest channel, but the motorway will (eventually) continue over
the East Bridge - the longest suspension bridge in the World.
