This hotel on the west side of Hamburg is converted from an old coal-gas works. It is very stylish, and there is a strong emphasis on quality architecture and design. The conversion has been particularly well done, and although many of the rooms (particularly the cheaper ones) have internal windows looking into the large interior spaces, this does not seem matter. Our room was very spacious and very nicely furnished, with an unusual view over some old plant and machinery which had been left suspended over what is now a sushi bar. The hotel also has a friendly, cosy bar, and a very good Italian/International restaurant - Da Caio.
A very good hotel all round, and well worth paying a bit extra for. The only draw-back is its location on the West side of Hamburg, about 5km from the city centre. However, there is an S-bahn station about 10 minutes walk away. |

Looks like a palace, actually it is a former TB hospital (built in the 1920s), in a splendid and peaceful setting in the middle of woodland overlooking the fjord outside Kolding. |
 |
Although we had seen pictures on the website, we still weren't prepared for how grand this hotel looked when we got our first sight of it on turning the corner at the end of a long road through the woods. Our room was in one of the two "Palæ" which form a courtyard around the entrance to the main part of the hotel. There are also stylish looking rooms and suites in modern buildings further up the hill behind the main complex, which are accessed via a slightly bizarre tunnel and lift arrangement. |
 |
This is not a cheap hotel, but its fabulous location perfectly suited the warm and sunny weather we had. The grounds go right down to the edge of the fjord, and the hotel has its own jetty/landing stage. The arcaded cafe and restaurant at the front provided an excellent opportunity to sit in the shade and admire the view over the fjord. |

An attractive traditional Danish country inn in the fishing village of Aalbæk, on the Kattegat coast. Near the tip of Denmark, approx. 20 km south of Skagen and 20 km north of Frederikshavn. The inn is right in the centre of the village, close to the shops, and only a short (10 minute) walk from the harbour.
This inn has nice modern rooms in two 2-storey blocks. The staff were polite and efficient, but not quite as friendly as the other inns we stayed at - probably because this is a larger inn, and they were quite busy. The only problem we experienced was the lack of parking spaces. Although we managed, there clearly were not enough for all the guests.
We had an excellent meal in the extensive, but cosy and very popular, restaurant in the older, main part of the inn. We paid DKK 837 for two courses, plus akvavit with the starters, 2 large beers each, and coffee. This worked out at about £40 each. Not cheap, but good value, as the quality of the food was excellent, and the service was good. Dave's herring platter starter was particularly generous - enough for two really (although Dave is still struggling to understand the Danish penchant for curry mayonnaise with their herring!).
Please note that this inn charges a 3.5% fee for payment by credit card. |

Another traditional Danish country inn in the village of Gram, in the centre of southern Jutland, southeast of Ribe. The inn is right opposite an attractive moated manor house, which also has accommodation run by the same people as the inn.
A very friendly inn with modern motel accommodation behind the older restaurant building. The ground floor rooms are large and have doors out onto a garden at the back. The restaurant was excellent, although very quiet the night we were there. |
