Tycho Brahe

Tycho Brahe (1546-1601)
Astronomer

Engraving of Tycho Brahe showing the famous false nose. This was made of silver (or copper, depending upon which books you read), and Brahe wore it for most of his life after he lost the tip of his nose in a sword duel with a fellow Danish student in Wittenburg (or Rostock, again depending upon who you read).

There is an excellent ‘on-line exhibition’ of pictures of Tycho Brahe “The Noble Dane: Images of Tycho Brahe” at the University of Oxford History of Science Museum's website.
